There are a few introductory ways that time travel works in story . For the paperbacked release of Lauren Beukes ’ prison term travel serial killer tale The Shining Girls , creative person Adam Hill and Sam Wilson put this chart together . It explain The Shining girl — and oh so much more .
Beukes told io9 :
When I wrote The Shining Girls I search into the technological machinist of time travel from mesotron to cosmic strings , infinite cylinders and wormhole and agnise I was much more concerned in the philosophical trouble of time travel . ( Although the House is probably a wormhole and I ’d like to think there ’s a whole lot of multiverses where my loathsome serial killer Harper never stumbles upon it at all and everyone populate happily ever after ) .

I wanted to play with loop and paradoxes and obsessions which meant the model I settle on was a fatalist one . Think of it is as Greek tragedy time travel – the more you resist your destiny , the more you put in to bring all the event that will bring it about , like Oedipus or MacBeth or King Herrod but also , in the way it loops back on itself , echoing the fable of Sisyphus and the penalisation of Prometheus .
My friends Adam Hill and Sam Wilson put together a ready to hand chart traverse some of the different modelling used in recent pappa culture . It was a fun project and I ’d love to know what you think , what ’s miss from the chart and where other books and movies fit in .
