Mobula beam are perhaps advantageously know fortheir bold attempts at flight of steps * , but these animals can be every bit as arresting below the waves as above them , as this remarkable photograph reveals . They almost seem like an foreign encroachment .

“ The rays were moving quite fast , ” writes photographer Eduardo Lopez Negrete , who photograph the rout of genus Mobula ray as they receded into the waters of Baja , Mexico . “ It was punishing enough keeping up with them from the control surface , let alone dive down to take a closer look . ”

Negrete submitted the picture to the2014 National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest . The entry window for this year ’s challenger closed June 30th , so you ’ll have to wait for 2015 ’s competition to submit pic of your own – but achiever will be announced by July 31st .
- For the naive , here ’s what I intend by “ flight . ” Members of the Mobula genus are often observed breaching the pelagic airplane and giving their broad fins a few good flapping before slapping back through the H2O ’s surface . It is simultaneously impressive and all unintimidating :
