A phantom visited my voicemail this week — three second and fifteen secondsof hold music for a conversation no one initiated . Now I ’m sharing it with you .
These day , consumer technology mostly works as wait . My laptop computer boots up , the linkup point to the right webpage , and the webpage loads a video recording of people fudge food without any major glitches . I miss the glitches .
I did not sense this style back when my homework disappear thanks to a 2 a.m. Windows crash . The other day I got a voicemail . No one had call me . At least I do n’t think they had . This is n’t strange , really . Like everyone else , I getplentyof junk e-mail calls , and those call option go to voicemail where they can warn me that I ’m behind on my car insurance ( not true ) or I owe money to the IRS ( somewhat true ) or someone stole my Social Security number ( almost in spades true ) . I listen to all of them just in showcase it ’s something significant , but it never is , and then they ’re deleted to make distance for new robodialers who say me about more problems I do or do not have .
But the substance I take the other twenty-four hour period was dissimilar . It was a song - length recording of watery , arpeggiating synthesizer music , and a wood — maybe a clarinet or oboe — keen above it . K - Mart’sunearthed muzak tapeshave a standardised quality , but do n’t convey the same sense of longing . It was like these displace instrument were row upriver against their own dirty call - quality . I listen to the whole thing , then texted it to myself and listened to it again the next day .
I ’ll believably never roll in the hay where this hold euphony came from , much less how it got trapped in my letter box . Even if it ’s a first for me , this form of thing might not even be unusual . But I ’d care to think some simple machine failed to execute its function as expect and this was the pleasant , unplanned result — an unidentified song , just for me , which is now yours too .
