The solar occultation in March has been snap to death — fromevery which angleand even from space . But here ’s a late challenger for what may be the redolent exposure of the eclipse yet : a glowing black Elvis over a barren snowscape , as enchant by astronomers take note the sunlight ’s magnetic field .
Back in March , the Solar Wind Sherpas squad , headed by Shadia Habbal at the University of Hawaii at Manoa , set up camp in Norway ’s Svalbard island . Thanks to a crystal clear sky , they were able-bodied to shoot the solar Saint Elmo’s light , or that gloriole of plasma surrounding the sun . The corona is always there , but it ’s ordinarily not seeable . With the moonlight blob out most of the sun ’s light , the streak of blood plasma on the spur of the moment became clear against the dark sky . The closeup of the corona below is sew together together from 29 freestanding photos .
