Brown sit down down with us to talk about the challenges of writing Leia as a ill-affected teen , the joys of drawing Jar Jar Binks , and the advantages of receive Darth Vader as a dada :
io9 : Was Vader ’s Little Princess more of a challenger to write than Darth Vader and Son ?
Jeffrey Brown : It was challenging on a few different storey . One being that Vader and Son cover so much not only in terms of Star Wars situations , but in general parenting office that I could make joke about . And also a lot of Vader and Son was based on experiences with my own son , and I do not at this point have a teenage daughter . So the solution to the one challenge of come up with new aspects of parenting to make fun of was to go with Leia as a teenager . Then it became a question of where to find that cloth , which was fundamentally looking at supporter who do have daughter and thinking about my own meter in high school and watching and thing .
It ’s particularly interesting because you have Leia as a malcontent teen , but she really is a Rebel in the motion-picture show .
What ’s funny is , when I begin writing this account book , I never really thought about that kind of parallel — essentially both Luke and Leia are the ill-affected teenagers , moderate dissimilar values from their father . For whatever understanding it ’s an easy affair to look over , but when you look intimately at the films , a lot of those things conform to together so nicely .
You suggest at her activeness with the Rebellion a lot . In the human race of this account book , is she an active member of the Rebel Alliance ?
It ’s all about taste to walk a blood line . I thought about it a heap , but I attempt to do was never have it end on one side or the other . Because if you explicitly make her part of the Rebellion , then things depart to not make sentience about why Vader would n’t punish her differently . It breaks down the father - daughter relationship too much . But if you do n’t hint at her being part of the genuine Rebellion , then you kind of lose touch with the Star Wars story .
There ’s a great second in the Scripture where Leia holler at Vader that she hat him and he ’s delighted , telling her to expend her hate .
I guess my thinking was that Vader would be assay to turn Leia in the same fashion he was trying to flex Luke . When you have a moment like that , it ’s a shimmer on how the begetter ’s interpreting their girl ’s action . So I guess a more generic example would be like the daughter doing something and the father consider it ’s this sweet trivial innocent routine and then the girl ’s really creep out — that kind of idea of the Father of the Church being a petty oblivious . So when [ Leia ] says she detest ’s him and he ’s suppose , “ Well , this is great ! This is precisely what I want . ” But that ’s not how it ’s going to terminate .
Did you ever put yourself in Vader ’s brake shoe and attempt to imagine what it would be like to have a girl like Leia ?
I tried not to , because I suppose I ’m aware that anything that she ’s doing as a daughter , my boy could put me through the same troubles . Other than the sweet moments , where it ’s very rewarding , I try out not to think about how someday my son might be really furious at me and ramp out and I wo n’t be able to do anything about it .
And you get Jar Jar in there again .
You know , as much Jar - Jar is this polarizing bod amongst Star Wars fans , he ’s actually a lot of play to draw . And tyke do like him , so I wish to put him in a little bit , have it be fairly minimise . So in this book he pops up in the background a couple of time , and there ’s one scene where he ’s kind of a laugh in a gore , but it ’s not so shoot - you - over - the - drumhead .
Was there a snatch of Star Wars care fulfilment on your part ? At one stop , Leia gets an hug drug - wing for your birthday ; did you want an X - extension for your natal day ?
It ’s something never quite outfit . Like Luke never receive an X - wing for his natal day ; suddenly he ’s just flying X - Wings everywhere and has an limitless supplying of 10 - wings . Star Wars does n’t really deal with the economics of what it would be like to get a spaceship for your natal day and what that would mean . So for me , I ordinarily just gloss powerful over the why anyone would ever bother to give me a — I always wanted a snowspeeder to take flight . I just conk straight to fly the snowspeeder .

you may probably get away with a lot of things that you would n’t be able to get forth with otherwise . Whether it ’s that people might not get back at you for something or people might not take advantage of you in the same way because of who your father is .
