The Karate Kiduniverse is about to go global . Though the original film series spent one episode in Japan , the next five episodes inCobra Kaiseason sixwill see the story whisk to Barcelona , Spain as the student and senseis of Miyagi - Do struggle dojos from every corner of the Earth . It’sthe bragging , most dangerous(and wholly fictional ) karate tournament on the planet , the Sekai Taikai .
Episodes 6 - 10 ofthe 15 - sequence last seasonof the Netflix show debut on November 15 , and io9 recently spoke with the show ’s creators Jon Hurwitz , Josh Heald , and Hayden Schlossberg about them . We blab about having a clean canvas to make a karate tournament that ’s unexampled and surprising but also served the report . We talked about what it ’s like get closer to the end . We also talked about how they feel being instrumental in , somehow , makingThe Karate Kidcool again .

This interview has been edited for distance and clarity .
Germain Lussier , io9 : These next five instalment are by far the most karate - filled and action - pack of the entire serial so far . Tell me about rise the events of the Sekai Taikai , cause it felt like partSquid Game , part WWE Royal Rumble , and a whole bunch more .
Jon Hurwitz : From the showtime , our thing was it has to feel different than the All - Valley [ Karate Tournament ] . We want it to experience dissimilar . We wanted there to be different combinations . We did n’t want it just to be straight - up one - on - one fighting . So , in the [ writers ’ ] way , we peach about a lot of different ideas and it was unlike combinations that were often driven by the story at the death of the 24-hour interval . This is a reference - drive show . So it was thinking about what ’s going on with the characters . They needing to work together , so you ’re coming up with issue where they would need to work together in rules of order to succeed . Different individual drama going on between the characters like with Demetri and Hawk , that kind of matter . And within these fights , cypher out how to incorporate thing like balance with Miyagi - Do … Everything was sort of driven first and foremost through where we were with characters , but we want things that palpate like there was an tot up level of risk . An add level of intensity level .

We bonk the thought of it not just being Cobra Kai versus Miyagi - do . That was the other big matter for us . There are 16 teams here and we want you to get that flavor and tone of all these different squad from all these different countries throughout and have unlike scrap style and dissimilar gis and unlike characters and different competition . So there was so much that go into it and it was in spades not one of the comfortable things that we ’ve done in the author ’s room . There was a lot of a lot of very meticulous planning and discussions about each and every result .
io9 : I ’m lucky enough to have watched these installment through twice already and I laugh , mayhap harder the second clock time , at the hawk sound effect when Hawk is fighting . I roll in the hay it ’s been there before but it seems to hit severely at the Sekai Taikai . What ’s the story behind bear a hawk noise play when Hawk is fighting ?
Hurwitz : That start in season one , correct ?

Josh Heald : Yeah .
Hayden Schlossberg : I thought that was an editor matter .
Heald : It was .

Schlossberg : It was never written into a hand . It felt like one of the editor program or something put that into one of Hawk ’s moves or something and we just love it .
Heald : I think it was when he showed his tattoo for the first time you got that sound . And he kind of punched so when he did it again and at the tournament in season one we brought it back and it became this thing that was like , “ Okay he ’s got his own little sound effect . ” The issue is as the season have gone on we ’ve layered orchestras on top of orchestra on top of , you know , concluded choruses and sound core and everything else So you really draw to dial up that hawk sound for it to punch through .
Hurwitz : The hawk speech sound though — you bring up the medicine though , Josh — different character obviously have dissimilar themes throughout the show musically and I think the war hawk level-headed effect is just part of that whole taste .
io9 : Next sentence I verbalise to you guys , I ’ll probably have view the last five episodes so I have to ask this question one last metre . Is there any world where we construct to a situation where you could match in “ You ’re the Best ” ?
Heald : There ’s always a possibility . await , you could you could start checking off the tilt of things we have n’t done leading up to the last five and we have n’t donethatyet . So , that that ’s a possibility . And there are other possibilities . I will say everything we do is born out of an purpose and everything we do is born out of a love for this story and this world and this universe . And , you know , while we ’re sunsetting this series , we hope we ’re not sunsetting the universe . We have a lot of plans for how we ’re continuing that . So if you do n’t see something in the final five episode that you ’ve really been crossing your fingers and hoping for , just eternal rest assured it ’s something that we ’re hoping to have an opportunity to to revisit in the future as well .
io9 : I was gon na stop with that but Josh you convey it up . Any updates on how you might continue theKarate Kiduniverse in the future ?
Schlossberg : I’m not sure if there ’s go to be any update before the final five episode other than we ’re always teasing that we ’re cerebrate and work on things and that includes work with [ Karate Kidwriter and creator ] Robert Mark Kamen on hooey . We just get laid this world and it is semisweet for us to have to finish the show so there ’s this creative urge to continue it in some fashion , but nothing official to say .
Heald : I would hope in the next few months there ’ll be something prescribed to share and talk about , but you know as of yet there ’s not .
io9 : There is , however , the new film and I know you guys have nothing like a shot to do with that but I feel like , asKarate Kidfans , you probably have a sense of superbia that your show kind of wreak it back , right ? I do n’t retrieve that movie would have live five years ago withoutCobra Kai . So what are your kind of thoughts on this affair that you all love now becoming popular and relevant again ?
Schlossberg : Yeah , it ’s awesome to see Ralph Macchio on the movie poster . We ’re buff of the ’ 80s and to give life to this mankind is exciting . We ’re aware of aspect of that movie , but it ’s also because we were shootingCobra Kaiwhile they were make it , we ’re just really funny about it . So there ’s an element for us where we ’re fans seeing material hail out for that and we can feel what fans finger , like in terms ofKarate Kidcontent out there .
io9 : Last thing before spoiler , people are run to take in these instalment , love them , and then be like , “ Oh my god I still have to expect a pair months for the final five . ” Give me your final good tease of how you experience about the concluding five and what people can expect .
Heald : Wow . We are enormously proud of what we pulled off in the final five . It is go to deliver upon every cliffhanger that we ’ve coiffure up . And it is going to go to some places that you do n’t gestate . I ’ll just say , having watch over the concluding five numerous time , it ramps up and then pick up a swiftness , a pace , a momentum that I do n’t call back we ’ve ever done … peculiarly the last three . I ’ll just say groom yourselves . Hydrate . Because you ’re gon na want to watch all five plausibly in one seance . It ’s gon na be hard to put down .
