Fantasy has a problem – it is inherently kitsch . What do I think of by kitsch ? shite that multitude unaccountably like . I ’m a fancy rooter , so please do n’t put your fist through your computing gadget projection screen just yet . Give me a chance to explain .
The dictionary specify kitsch as tawdry , vulgarised or ostentatious fine art usually with pop or soppy prayer . unicorn , wizards , put upon young poor devil who come to be great mages , haughty princesses , riders in dark cloak – Robert Jordan , if you want it tot up in two Book . Jordan ’s a author who more than fulfils the ‘ vulgarised ’ part of the definition with his nickel and dime bloated version of Tolkien . Not saying it ’s awry , or even unenjoyable , just like a liveliness - size statue of Chucky from minor ’s Play in your bread and butter room is n’t wrong . But it is kitsch .
Of course , I ’m not saying all phantasy is kitsch or that all uses of unicorn , wizard etc are kitsch – see the employment of Robert Holdstock who handles these elements brilliantly and movingly .
But any writer of Fantasy has to decide what he want to do with the kitsch monster that ’s holding their Bible in its hands . you could live with it and love it if you want to , ally with it and rule the world as Jordan did . Jordan laughs all the means to the camber while not gravel a pinch about kitsch and writing line such as :
Ba’alzamon ’s clothes were the color of dried parentage , and madness and hatred and triumph battled on his face . “ You see , youngling , you may not conceal from me perpetually . ”
This is a useful piece of writing . I propose a run in fantasy called the ‘ Youngling Test ’ . If the writer uses the word ‘ youngling ’ at any point then it shows he or she does not care about kitsch . In fact , we could slue it to the ‘ Ling ’ trial . Lordling , elfling , godling , princeling , hatchling ’ . If any of these words seem you have intercourse what you ’re in for and can either chafe your hands and mutter ‘ I will be master of the universe ! ’ or you’re able to move on to something that , rather than cozy up to the kitsch monster , dons its plate armor , take out out its sorcerous blade and tries to abbreviate out its evil heart .
Those fantasy author who want to stave off kitsch have a variety of tactic at their disposal . Number one is smash the kitsch monster in the top dog by ramping up the misanthropical and drear / naturalistic elements of the rest of the piece of work . OK , you ’ve got wizards but you ’ve also get more grit than Lord Grit of Grit Towers .
Joe Abercrombie and George RR Martin interject a cynicism and a step of violence into their workplace , they debilitate it of all persuasion . Sentimentality is the biography blood of the kitsch monster . They turn off the monster ’s throat and watch it twitching on the floor . George RR Martin in special display a cruelty towards killing his characters that margin on the distressing for those of us who have farm to love them .
If that does n’t appeal , you could inject intellectualism – like Philip Pullman or way and wit like Susanna Clarke in her Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell book . Or you may inject intellectualism , style , humor , gumption , grotesquery and a whole heap more in the trend of China Miéville .
My response in the Wolfsangel serial – and my novel book Fenrir in particular – is to hear to storm up the experiential repugnance and strive for a kind of Beowulf or Macbeth - like atmosphere . If I ’m doing it right it leaves you chew over about what a cruel and cold universe we live in , as you watch the characters shudder through freezing mires , traumatised by insane magic , shattered by the futility of their struggles against their destinies . If I ’m doing it wrong it go away you think ‘ hmm , pretentious and cheerless , a rare combination ’ .
And there consist the risk for those of us who are interested in make on the kitsch monster . In operate the other mode , in trying too hard to be ‘ naturalistic ’ , honest , game or meaningful we end up over - reaching ourselves and the monster eats us anyway .
However , the lusus naturae will always baby-sit burbling and belching at the marrow of the Fantasy kingdom and I imagine that it , and responses to it , will stay on to define Fantasy for years to come .
