Charla Nash , who received a full face transplant in late May of this year after she was mangle by a friend ’s chimp in 2009 , has released a photo and statement about her discussion .

Nash lose her hired man , lips , olfactory organ and eyes in the fire , exit her unsighted and disfigured . The transplantation operation took 20 hours .

In her statement , Nash expressed gratitude to the family line of the organ presenter , who remains anonymous . She wrote :

These transplantation could not have been possible without the generousness of a kinsfolk unknown to me . They gave me a grimace and hired hand . I will now be able-bodied to do thing I once took for grant . I will be able to smell . I will be able to eat normally . I will no longer be disfigured . I will have lip and will mouth clear once again . I will be capable to snog and embrace loved ones . I am hugely thankful to the giver and her family .

Nash also welcome a double hand transplant . However , Nash said she developed pneumonia , and because of the complications that ensued , the custody need to be removed . [ exposure of Nash before and after her transplantation ]

Nash thanked the medical master who regale her , writing :

Since February 16 , 2009 , I have been bless to be in the concern of many incredible doctors , nurse , and caregivers . These professionals first saved my life , then heal my wounds and strengthened me to confront an uncertain future . They help me adjust to a cheeseparing impossible situation where I was ineffective to see , smell , and move with confidence without the use of hands . Finally , I was given the chance to restore most of what I lost by come to Brigham and Women ’s Hospital . Here I invite a new case and two hands that will allow me to be independent once again and able to be part of society . lose the new hands is just a gibbosity in the route of my recovery . I believe that one mean solar day I ’ll have two hand to help me live as a unsighted soul with sureness .

I give thanks everyone who has helped me for these last two and a half years .

" It ’s wonderful to see how Charla ’s convalescence has progress as she proceed taking steps toward her new aliveness , " order Dr. Bohdan Pomahac , director of the BWH Plastic Surgery Transplantation Program , who led the face transplant operation .

The transplant was the third full face organ transplant do at Brigham and Women ’s Hospital , in Boston and is only the second clock time that a face and treble hand graft has been attempt , the hospital said . The first was performed in France in 2009 , but that patient role died of a heart onset during a pursue - up surgery .

Nash also thanked aesculapian professionals at Stamford Hospital in Connecticut , who treated her directly after the attack , and at the Cleveland Clinic , where she was treated for 16 months before her transfer to Boston .
