By now , it ’s common noesis that Rogue One does not terminate happily for any of the independent characters . for sure , they fulfill their finish , and that finish makes many major thing possible , but they never get to see the fruits of their labor . In other versions of the handwriting , however , that was not the pillow slip .
While managing director Gareth Edwards hasadmitted this in the past , Rogue One ’s first writer Gary Whitta just give all the details of the original ending to Entertainment Weekly .
After Jyn and Cassian stole the plans , they ran across the beach ( a dead reckoning seen in other preview footage ) and a Rebel ship dribble down to pick them up . Once in space , Leia ’s ship met up with Jyn and Cassian ’s , but with Darth Vader ’s Star Destroyer in pursuit . They transferred the data to Leia ’s ship just as their ship was destroyed . However , as the first shot of A New Hope happened in the back of the form , a small safety valve pod release from the destroyed wreckage , indicate Jyn and Cassian had survived .
It ’s obviously a much glad conclusion , but Whitta said it just did n’t palpate right .
“ The fact that we had to jump through so many basket to keep them live was the piece of writing God differentiate us that if they were have in mind to live it would n’t be this difficult , ” Whitta told EW . “ We decide they should go bad on the aerofoil [ of Scarif ] , and that was the direction it ended . We were always trying to make all the slice fit together . We render every single mind . Eventually , through endless development you get through an evolutionary process where the best interpretation climb to the top . ”
It ’s deserving noting this version was never shot . It just existed on the Thomas Nelson Page .
