As time of year two near its premiere on HBO and Max , star Ewan Mitchell commit some insight into what ’s next for the subsister of that mid - air free-for-all : the very complicated Aemond Targaryen .
In time of year one of House of the Dragon , we saw how Aemond chafe at his position as the 2d Logos of the late King Viserys Targaryen and Alicent Hightower . He was bullied as a kid , then became emboldened after he forcibly acquired Westeros ’ swelled dragon , a maneuver that led to the cousin - on - cousin scrap that cost him an eye . Heading into the new season , Aemond has a middling exalted role in the Red Keep — jr. brother to King Aegon II — but he ’s still carry on with the reverberations of having induce the death of Lucerys Velaryon and his dragon Arrax .
“ The 2nd son , it ’s a prominent topic throughout our our show , ” Mitchell say a group of diary keeper , including io9 , at a late House of the Dragon closet day . “ You know , Aemond , similar to Daemon [ Targaryen ] , he ’s a prince who stands to inherit nothing . And so he recognize that what he wants in aliveness , he ’s going to have to go out and get it for himself—[he ] has a luck to prove — and to what duration he will go to achieve that . ”

House of the Dragon fans have see a glimpse of Aemond ’s worst qualities already , thanks to his electric discharge in time of year one . But in the finale , there ’s also a sensation that he ’s not altogether rotten at the heart . “ For season one — in a show full of morally compromise gray character — I wanted to give a lineament who at this breaker point in his life was just stark darkness … I desire to lean into it , only to contradict that hypothesis at the end of the season , ” Mitchell explain . “ That last shot you have of Aemond is that face of regret . He made a fault . And he ’s just as shocked as the interview . ”
That very well might change , Mitchell tantalise . “ Going into time of year two , he ’s now pit with a choice . He can return to King ’s Landing , admit that it was a error , and be at the hands of Rhaenyra ’s mercifulness . Or he can take the putting to death , so to talk , and become the most wanted gentleman in the kingdom . He ’s very conflicted . Aemond ’s a very conflicted character , for certain . ”
What ’s more , Mitchell added , “ I think one of the beauties of Aemond is that you do n’t necessarily hump what he is intend , but you know that he is think — the cog are turning behind his eyes . It ’s an interesting one at the end of season one , that minute after he kills Luke and Arrax , because it ’s only a consequence that the consultation and Armond share . Whether or not he he go home and say his mom and confesses that what he did was a here and now of failing is another matter . But if he does n’t , it will remain a little secret between Aemond and the interview , which I regain quite interesting , so to speak . ”
House of the Dragon season two arrives June 16 on HBO and Max .
