Girl Scout Cookies

WHAT IS IT:Girl Scouts’three new cookie flavors: Toffee-tastic, Rah-Rah Raisins, and Trios

WHY WE DID IT:Whenthe organizationthat brought us Thin Mints and Tagalongs has new cookies, you eat them and don’t ask questions.

I can’t think of one person who doesn’t love a Girl Scout Cookie. I’ve been witness to passionate debates on the merits of freezing your Thin Mints, I’ve seen Jim from accounting become the office hero when he announces his daughter is selling the beloved boxes, and I may have hidden stashes of Samoas around my apartment while telling my husband I took them to work. You know, to throw him off the trail. But love for these iconic cookies goes deeper than their sheer deliciousness: They represent a tradition, a taste that comes around but once a year, just long enough to remind us of how dreary life is without them.

This year, three new flavors will compete for your affections. I shared them all with my 3-year old daughter Benny (see? I’m not completely cookie-selfish!) to get her (not very) scientific take.

Girl Scout Cookies

Toffee-tastic— a gluten-free butter cookie with tiny toffee bits — is the first I try, and my least favorite of the three. Which is not to say it isn’t good. Rich and sweet, the toffee bits are a chewy contrast to the crunchy, crumble-y cookie. The finish was a little gritty, but Benny declares, “I liked it.”

Next up, theRah-Rah Raisins:An oatmeal cookie dotted with raisins and Greek yogurt chunks. The first thing I notice is the pleasant cinnamon smell. I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about the Greek yogurt chunks, but they were a nice balance to the sweet raisins, and if I didn’t read the description I might have mistaken them for chocolate chips. Benny’s take: “Mmm, good.”

Finally, we try theTrios: A chocolate chip peanut butter oatmeal cookie. Also gluten-free, these are oat-based, so lack the sometimes sandy texture of a gluten-free flour. While Toffee-tastic and Rah-rah Raisin are crispy, the Trios have a chewy texture with a great balance of toasty oats, rich peanut butter and sweet chocolate chips. These are a total treat for someone gluten-free, and a satisfying snack for anyone. Benny’s favorite, she said “These cookies are so good, Mommy. Can we also eat them for Family Movie Night?” (An awesome thing we do once a week with popcorn and, yes, some cookies.)

I applaud the the Girl Scouts for mixing it up, especially for the gluten-free set who must have felt a little left out. (For the last 98 years they’ve had to hear the frozen Thin Mint debate and watch Jim from accounting bask in his cookie glory.) None of the three new flavors could rival the classic Tagalongs or Samoas (honestly, what cookie could?), but they’re a great addition to the Girl Scouts’ lineup. One that we’ll have for family movie night, at least once a year.
